Strange Tales of Songling is a fantasy horror role-playing game inspired by Chinese Ghost stories.

You play as traveling scholars, wandering warriors, demon hunters, and magicians striving against monsters and the powers of darkness. It is a game of investigation, survival, kung-fu, and terror.

It is set in a mysterious dream-Hell (not Western Hell, but Chinese Hell) where brave souls fight and investigate to save themselves from damnation.

In this dream-realm, you are tasked either as the groom to Lung Min, Daugher to the Lung family, or as constables to Sheriff Yu in Waterfall Bay.

However, horrible murders by decapitation have been happening in Waterfall Bay, and people have said they have seen dragons eating the dead people's heads. What's worse is that bodies are disappearing from the constables' house before they can be properly examined.

Since time immemorial, the land of Ende has been known as the Crossroads of Existence and the Land of Monsters, and some beings of Ende have very long memories indeed. For Cycles incalculable to mortal minds, Ende has between a battleground for the Cosmic Forces of the Universe. The wars between the Gods and Demons of multitude, Order, Chaos, and petty mortal kings are fought on Ende.

This status of a war-ground has given birth to many colourful and strange cultures created by the immortals of Ende and the other bizarre beings who have found themselves in Ende either through cosmic war recruitment, draft, travel, or shipwreck. The wars of old have been over for many lifetimes, yet the differences and conflicts remain in the upper echelons of the Cosmos. Now Ende is delicately balanced on the tip of a smoldering Cold War that has its connections everywhere, from the ends of the multiverse to the microscopic concerns of mortal individuals.

However, you don't try to worry about that too much, for you have learned to deal with these problems as an inhabitant of Ende for your entire life - - - or afterlife. You are just someone trying to find your way in this weird world; you might try and strike it rich, provide and protect your community, or gain enlightenment.

Side-note: I have studied Hindu religion and mythology, and while they will be a significant element of this tabletop game, they will be a starting point rather than a focus. Respect will be attempted at all turns. Respect and be informed about other cultures and religions.

Blood Stains the sidewalk. Bullet holes are on the walls of the buildings. Punk rock and roll rages. Protesters are being repelled, and the lycanthropes prowl the streets in the night. Your business is with these lycanthropes. Punk gangs of lycanthropes fight one another for control of River City and other, darker things; you may be somebody ordinary investigating these were-gang wars, a wizard looking for a new angle in these fights, or perhaps you are a were-beast yourself. Whatever you are, you’re knocking on the Werewolf gang's door for or help. Yet help always comes with a price. This game will be using Dark Streets and Darker Secrets, an OSR-esque game for dark fantasy settings like World of Darkness.

However, you create your setting. I might be using Powered by the Apocalypse techniques because I am not an expert on World of Darkness, and I want to give my players the setting they want. Come on down if you fancy being a punk rock werewolf, heavy-metal monster-hunter, or goth vampire-fighting dark sorcerers, cacodemons, and other monsters.

This game will be great if you like Evil Dead, World of Darkness, especially Werewolf: The Apocalypse. The Nightworld RPG. River City Girls and other Beat 'em up games. Supernatural. The Light at the End. Neverwhere. The Deadly Streets by Harlan Ellison. Punk rock subculture.

The remote Barrier Islands are situated on the coastline outskirts of The Antebellum American South - - - Or is this America? The Barrier Islands are reported to be the habitation of many strange things, men have had meetings with hooded black men who hide a second hyena-head behind their hood, women have heard the crying laughter of Boohags in the bogs at night, Tommy Rawbones stalks that night in the swamps and lakes, and even towns, and there is a lighthouse whose light mutates those it touches deep in the wilds of the islands. Or so the people say - - - You are a pirate on the coast of the Barrier Islands in the employment of Deadly Smedley, notorious pirate captain. With them, you ply the rivers and the sea of the Barrier Islands and care not for the strange tales of the islands. That is until Deadly Smedley wants to attempt helping a slave runaway-escape on a plantation - - - that is where the truth behind the tales begin to enter your life.

This game will be great if you like Django Unchained, Lucio Fulci's the Beyond, Pumpkinhead, the horror stories of Ambrose Bierce, Pigeons from Hell by Robert E. Howard.

Players should build starting characters ahead. You have to create a pirate character in the service of Deadly Smedley.

The Supernatural has been revealed. There ARE things out there, going bump in the night. Or so you have been told, they are many skeptics. Whatever the case, things are bad in Personville, USA. Entrenched poverty has plagued the city for longer than people can remember and crime grows crazy because of it. Yet now, recently, figures associated with the supernatural have been appearing at an abandoned and condemned metro station and Daniel Gordon, local official, wants to know why they are manifesting there. You may be a friend of Daniel Gordon, a private investigator, a tv news reporter, or someone else, but whoever you are, you are getting to the bottom of the newly-appearing figures and the secrets of the metro station. However, you have to survive the deadly streets of Personville as well. Criminals and civil unrest run rampant and they just might be working for people, or things, other than crime bosses.

This game will be great if you like Clive Barker, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Silent Hill, The work of Dashiell Hammett, the Warriors, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Ramsey Campbell, the films of David Lynch, Modern Noir fiction with a supernatural spice.

You think the past is dead and gone. You are wrong. You think the wicked witch is dead. You are mistaken. They are awakening . . .

Unearthed recently by local muckraking is the story of the stolen statue of the widow:

A new archaeological discovery of an ancient Hindu temple in the regency of Tabanan has created a huge flurry of tomb-robbing in Bali.

The "Widow Statue" rumor has emerged from this underground black market. The statue is an effigy of Rangda, a terrible manifestation of the Great Goddess Durga in Hindu mythology, and is worth a considerable amount to the historical society as well as priceless for private collectors.

You may be a journalist, archaeologist, grave robber, or even a cop on the search for the Widow Statue and you are determined to get it.

However, don't let your curiosity, or even greed, get the better of you, for there are serial killings happening on this slice of the island of Bali, so watch your step. Guard your soul as well, for there is something even more sinister lurking than just stolen statues and stalking psychos.

Disclaimer: I am using the actual folklore and mythology of Bali and, more broadly, Indonesia. I respect the source material involved to the best of my ability. The depiction is not accurate due to my inability to know everything about Indonesian folklore and the limitations of tabletop RPGs. Liberty has expressed that he would like it that if anyone becomes interested in this mythology that they decide to research into the mythology.
